Skincare routine: the right order, morning and evening

A routine works when the order is right and the steps match your skin — not when it has the most products. Here is the sequence that applies to every skin type, and how to adapt it to yours.

The rule: thinnest to richest

Each product should be able to reach the skin. Applying a rich cream before a watery serum blocks it. So the order always goes from the most fluid texture to the most occlusive one, whatever products you own.

Morning routine

  • Gentle cleanser — or just water if your skin feels tight.
  • Toner or essence on damp skin to start hydration.
  • Serum: vitamin C for tone and radiance, or a hydrating serum.
  • Moisturiser suited to your type: gel for oily, cream for dry.
  • Sunscreen SPF 30–50, every single day. This is the single highest-impact step for dark spots, lines and firmness.

Evening routine

  • Double cleanse if you wore makeup or sunscreen: oil or balm first, then a gentle cleanser.
  • Toner or essence.
  • Treatment: retinol, niacinamide, azelaic acid or an exfoliating acid — one active per night, not all of them.
  • Eye care if you use one.
  • Richer moisturiser, plus a facial oil or balm on dry skin.

Weekly extras

  • Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week maximum.
  • Hydrating mask one to two times a week, especially in winter.
  • Clay mask on the T-zone only, if you are congested.

Build the routine around your own numbers

The hard part is choosing what your skin needs right now. A Yepoyo analysis scores twelve criteria and turns them into two ready-made routines — one 100% natural, one with all product types — with concrete product examples for morning and evening. Re-scan every two to four weeks to see which steps are actually earning their place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order to apply skincare?

Go from the thinnest texture to the richest: cleanser, toner or essence, serum, eye care, moisturiser, then sunscreen in the morning or a richer cream or oil at night.

How many steps does a good routine need?

Four to five well-chosen steps beat ten random ones. A cleanser, a hydrating serum, a moisturiser and a daily sunscreen already cover the essentials for most skin.

Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?

Keep them apart: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night, and never with an exfoliating acid in the same session. Introduce one active at a time, two or three nights a week, and build up slowly.

How long before I see results?

Hydration improves within days. Texture, blemishes and dark spots take four to twelve weeks because skin renews itself over weeks. Consistency matters more than adding products.
